On the eighth day of COP16, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, together with representatives of the Norwegian government, announced that the Nordic country will contribute $20 million to the fight against deforestation in Colombia.
"I would like to thank the Norwegian government for its constant and shared vision. This announcement is a way of working together for a future where biodiversity and human development can coexist in peace with nature. I am convinced that by working together we can be an example of sustainability and climate resilience for the world," said Cabrera at the press conference where the announcement was made.
Tore O. Sandvik, Norway's Minister of Climate and Environment, said the funding will initiatives to protect one of the world's most biodiverse regions and reduce illegal deforestation in the Amazon, strengthening an important partnership for global environmental protection.

"Colombia's success in reducing deforestation shows the power of effective action. Last year, deforestation reached its lowest level in 23 years. Colombia has the second highest biodiversity in the world, so this is an environmental initiative on a global scale," said O. Sandvik.
The official also recalled that since 2015, Norway has been an important partner for Colombia on environmental issues. "Through our results-based agreement, we have ed the government's work against deforestation. This cooperation has strengthened law enforcement, promoted sustainable development in forest areas, strengthened indigenous rights, protected and restored forests and transformed agriculture," said Sandvik.
The $20 million is new money that will be invested in rainforest conservation efforts over three years. The money will help combat large-scale illegal logging and environmental crime, and strengthen sustainable forest management.
This will include initiatives to provide alternative livelihoods for small-scale farmers to prevent them from resorting to deforestation. Norway's will also promote the rights of indigenous peoples to manage their territories.
Last year, Norway announced a contribution of $10 million to Colombia for results achieved under the Climate and Forest Partnership. Colombia has decided that this will finance the implementation of the recently launched Colombian Action Plan for Nature.
In addition, the Norwegian Government's Climate and Forest Initiative will projects that contribute to forest conservation as part of the peace process.
